Located about 48 kilometers east of Guwahati in the Morigaon district of Assam, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is one of India’s best-kept secrets when it comes to rich biodiversity and wildlife viewing. Despite being a relatively small sanctuary—spanning just about 38.8 square kilometers, with 16 square kilometers of effective rhino habitat—Pobitora boasts the highest density of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros in the world. It’s often referred to as the "Mini Kaziranga", due to its similar terrain and thriving population of rhinos.
Pobitora is most famous for its Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), and visitors are almost guaranteed a sighting during safaris. As of recent estimates, the sanctuary is home to over 100 rhinos, a significant number given the small size of the park. The sanctuary also shelters wild boars, Asiatic buffaloes, barking deer, leopards, and even occasional elephants. Although tigers are not resident here, they are known to migrate from nearby forested areas.
Pobitora is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. With over 275 species of birds, including pelicans, storks, herons, ibises, kingfishers, and migratory ducks, the sanctuary becomes a vibrant avian haven, especially during the winter months when flocks of migratory birds arrive from Siberia and Central Asia. The marshlands, grasslands, and waterbodies provide ideal nesting and feeding grounds.
The sanctuary lies on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River and features a combination of wetlands, grasslands, and forest patches. This diverse ecosystem supports a wide array of flora and fauna. During the monsoons, the sanctuary floods with water from the Brahmaputra and nearby rivers, enriching the soil and supporting rich grass growth—the primary diet of the rhinos. Despite its small size, Pobitora plays a vital role in conservation efforts, particularly for the endangered one-horned rhinoceros. It acts as a buffer zone and a source population for translocation programs to other protected areas.
Visitors can enjoy early morning jeep safaris or elephant rides, which offer an up-close view of rhinos in their natural habitat. Jeep safaris are generally allowed twice a day—morning and afternoon—and cover the core areas of the park. Elephant safaris, though more limited, provide a unique perspective and better access to marshy terrain.
Pobitora also offers opportunities for rural and eco-tourism. Many nearby villages, such as Mayong, are rich in culture and tradition, especially known for their history with magic and mysticism. Local homestays and eco-resorts offer an immersive experience of Assamese village life.
The sanctuary remains open from November to April, after which it closes due to heavy monsoon rains and flooding. December to February is the best period, as the weather is pleasant and bird sightings are at their peak.
By Road: Pobitora is about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Guwahati, via Chandrapur or Mayong.
Nearest Airport: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati (approx. 50 km).
Nearest Railway Station: Guwahati Railway Station (approx. 45 km).
